Pori Arisi Urundai – Sweet Rice Balls

Rekindling my childhood memories with snacks which welcomed me after a tiring school session. My mother made it a point to fill my tummy with nutritious and healthy diet especially for evening snacks. I grew up before to the globisation era, the oil dunked chips weren’t a national snack then, so I had home-made snacks and relished to the fullest.
This Sweet Rice Balls always takes me back to my primary school days, Travel along with me to taste the sweetness of the innocent days.
PoriArisi Urundai –Roasted Rice sweet Balls
½ Cup Parboiled Rice
2 Cups water
¼ Cup jaggery
¼ tsp Dry ginger powder
4 Crushed Cardamoms
¼ Cup Grated Coconut
Procedure
1. Dry roast the rice till it changes its colour to light brown.
2. Let it cool down to room temperature and grind in a mixie to a coarse mixture..
3. Dissolve jaggery in 1 cup of hot water and strain for impurities
4. Heat a pan with the strained jaggery water and another cup of water .
5. When the water starts to boil, Now reduce the heat and add crushed cardamoms and dry ginger powder.
6. Then add the ground rice powder to it and mix thoroughly without lumps.
7. Now reduce the heat to low flame and allow it cook. It takes a couple of minutes to cook as the rice has already been roasted.
8. When it’s done, remove the pan from heat and let it cool down till you can tolerate its heat while rolling.
9. Take small portion and roll into balls, then roll over the coconut grating so that the balls gets a generous share.
